(More customer reviews)Mechanicals: Package is well thought out and includes the highest quality mechanical components. Good tires and a full size spare makes cross country travel a breeze. The whole assembly has some "give" between the axle and the load at three separate points, which makes that 150 pounds of wet bouncing kayaks caught in the crosswinds much easier to control when you're passed by a semi doing 80 MPH. The rig is rock steady up to 90 MPH (I have no idea where you heard this and do not try this at home).
Electricals: Tail lights and running lights are OK if installed properly - the "easy push in assembly" means that every splash of water from the highway will funnel directly into the electricals. I sealed mine with silicone caulk.
Assembly: My daughter and I had a blast putting this together. It was only when I went to get the tag that we ran into problems.
And speaking of problems, here is a WARNING TO PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS (no other state does this as far as I know): After assembling this awesome rig, don't get too happy just yet. You will need:
1. An "Enhanced Safety Inspection" (ESI). Chester County PA only has six garages "allowed" to do these. Your county's mileage may vary. You will need to bring your assembly manual and all the paperwork that came with the trailer, INCLUDING THE ORIGIN CERTIFICATE. My ESI cost about $110. NOTE: There is no VIN on this trailer. If your guy is good he'll punch a VIN into the rails. It turns out this VIN will not match the VIN you get back from the state. I don't know what this means yet but I live in PA so I'm sure I will find out at some point. I'll have to let you know. If they want to send your manual to Harrisburg tell them that Harrisburg already has my manual and they should be happy with that. You'll need your manual for step 3, at which point you will lose your manual, so if you want to keep it, make sure to give them a copy only.
2. A certified trailer weight from your local junkyard. Mine cost $4.
3. Bring the whole mess, INCLUDING THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL, to your local auto tag agency. They will then go out to find the VIN on the trailer. They will not find one (unless you've had your safety inspection done - in which case I don't know what will happen in Harrisburg when the ESI VIN doesn't match the one they pulled from their sphinctosaur). At this point you tell them you assembled the trailer yourself and you need something called a "salvage title".
4. Pay the nice auto tag people about $140 and wait "up to 90 days". My tags took 12 days to arrive.
This trailer is well designed, durable, seems reliable so far, and I expect to hand it down to my children. You can carry half a dozen bikes, or 200 pounds of gear in a clamshell, or three kayaks - you get the picture. Just plug it in to the back of your car, do a safety check, and off you go.
